Staying Cool on your Motorcycle!

Staying Cool on your Motorcycle!

Finally… It’s here! It’s hot and it’s dry, perfect for riding… Well, at least the roads are dry. You on the other hand may be a bit warm in your winter or all-season gear, so look no further… Grab a cold drink, and let us run you through our top picks for summer motorcycle gear!

Ventilated Motorcycle Helmets

It’s all about air-flow… (It’ll be a bit of a theme here throughout this post) To keep your head cool, you’ll want to look at products which are about maximum air flow. We’ve handpicked a selection of products which have advanced ventilation systems, such as the Arai Concept XE. But if that’s not your style there’s a range of other products that we’ve picked out, such as the Shoei GT Air 3, Shoei Neotec 3 and Klim Krios Pro.

Naturally, an open face helmet is a wise choice when it comes to staying cool and comfortable. Helmets such as the Davida Speedster v4 and DMD Vintage which offer a low-profile shape are a great choice for the style conscious rider… Couple that with a pair of ventilated goggles and you’ll look as cool as a cucumber!

Breathable Riding Jackets

If it’s hot outside, you can bet your bottom dollar that riders come into store asking for a lightweight summer or summer mesh jackets… It happened just this morning! So, hang up that leather jacket and switch to some cooling motorcycle gear that’s going to give you maximum airflow, such as the Furygan Mistral Evo 3, RevIt Eclipse 2 or Belstaff Temple Mesh.

Summer Gloves

First thing you do when you get off the bike is peel off those gloves that are sticking to your sweaty hands… Horrible thought, isn’t it? Fortunately for you there are options in the form of mesh, perforated leather and ventilated summer gloves which are lightweight and keep you cooler. We’ve picked out a selection for your perusal, such as the Klim Baja S4 and Klim Induction Glove as well as the Furygan TD12 and Furygan TD Air.

Lightweight Trousers

There’s a range of motorcycle trousers available to you that provide ventilation, whether it be textile trousers from RevIt such as the RevIt Poseidon 3 and RevIt Horizon 3 with their large mesh ventilation panels or the Scott Superlight Pant or perhaps a pair of protective riding jeans.

You may have a pair of riding jeans already, but are they single layer riding jeans? We love single layer riding jeans here at The Biker Company, they’re a great option to keep you cool as they allow air to pass through much better than a double or triple layer construction pair of jeans do… Being single layer, this also makes them lightweight. Couple a pair of single layer jeans with a set of D3O Ghost armour and you won’t even notice you’re wearing protective motorcycle jeans. There’s an array of options such as the straight fit John Doe Taylor Mono, Rokker Rokkertech Tapered Slim and for the lady riders we have a wide range of MotoGirl jeans, such as the MotoGirl Sherrie Leggings.

Footwear

Last but not least, you may want to explore lightweight and breathable options for footwear, there’s a range of options for you to choose from which are not only lighter than your traditional motorcycle boot but are also more comfortable. We’ve got a lot of riding trainers for you to look at but we’ve picked a few out for you such as the TCX Street 3, John Doe Neo and Falco Airforce; all of which are casual, comfortable and protective!

Summer Riding Tips

  • When you take your gear off, place it in the shade, out of the sun. It seems obvious, but we see it so much!
  • Don’t push your hot sweaty gloves inside your helmet. Open the visor and let it breath.
  • Wet a neck tube, such as a Buff and whilst you ride the water evaporation will cool your neck. The same idea works for mesh gloves, wet them and feel the cooling evaporation as you ride. Cooling the back of your neck and your wrists is an effective way to cool your blood.
  • Wear a technical base layer, not cotton or nylon. Technical underwear products are designed to wick moisture away from the body, allowing it to evaporate and cool the body. The materials are also antibacterial, they help to prevent body odour.
  • Wear short motorcycle boots and short vented gloves. The increased airflow around wrists and ankles helps to cool the body.
  • Mirrored or Iridium visors reflect the sun’s rays and reduces heat on your face. Much more effective than a dark or clear visor.
  • Stay hydrated… It’s important to drink plenty of water whilst out in the summer heat! Not tea, coffee or sugary drinks, just plain old water! Dehydration and increased body temperature reduce your performance, symptoms include, loss of concentration, slower response times, reduced alertness, increased error rate. Some people can also experience dizziness and reduced tolerance.  Heat stress and lack of fluids are bad news when riding a motorcycle.
